Under Indian law, cosmetic products are regulated by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Cosmetics Rules, 2020.
A cosmetic is generally defined as any product intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, altering appearance, perfuming, or grooming.
Examples of cosmetic products in India include:
- skincare creams and serums
- shampoos and conditioners
- perfumes and fragrances
- makeup products
- soaps and shower gels
- nail care products
However, products making therapeutic or medical claims may no longer be considered cosmetics. For example:
- anti-acne treatment creams
- anti-fungal creams
- hair regrowth products
- medicated shampoos
- skin whitening treatments claiming medical benefits
These products may instead fall under pharmaceutical or medicinal regulations, which involve stricter approval procedures.
